In the Beginning

Each Wednesday I would arrive home after school to a stack of newspapers in may driveway. I would roll them or an hour, put them in my burlap satchel, throws them over my shoulder to delivery. Most of the time, the newspaper would land in the appropriate location. Once or twice my aim was off, reaching in a goofy delivery. My pay was a whopping $12 per month, plus tips $25. I was ecstatic! $25 could buy me 400 pieces of Bazooka Bubble Gum. I was working for others along the way. I was rich!

Working for Others

I have worked for others along the way. It taught me that I do not like working for others. For some, working for others is great. There’s little thought that goes into a job with a specific task involved. Personally, I have lofty ambitions, which I’ve realized cannot be accomplished while helping someone else accomplish theirs.

Working for others serves a win/win purpose at times. While you are assisting someone in achieving their ambitions, you may also learn the inner works of an industry that may one day help you seize business success of your own.
Most of us sit and wait for something or someone to rescue us from where we are at in our professional lives. Each day passes and we have not yet seized business success because we do not consider ourselves in business. We listen to cd’s and podcasts and perhaps attend self help seminars to learn the secret to business success and perhaps to learn the secret of life. The good news is that with a positive attitude, thoughts do become things. Even if we understand physics and recite Newton’s statement that became law, that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, most are still waiting for a transformational event to save us.

Seize the Day

We feel we are drowning in life with no life preservers. We see millionaire celebrities all around us and read of billionaires influencing the society of the world on a daily basis.

I’ve witnessed all to often individuals get the opportunity they have been waiting for. The opportunity they strive for does in fact arrive. There is a saying that says the harder you work, the luckier you get. This is so true. Work harder (and smarter ) than everyone else and find opportunity at your feet. What then? From my experience, most watch it simply sail right by.

It takes true guts, true grit and character to seize business success. When the opportunity arises, it’s far easier to do nothing and watch it slip by than to grab opportunity by the balls and accept the fact you can succeed if you just step out of your comfort zone. Business success is not glamour and glitz. Its gross, sweaty, and exhausting work. If you’re okay with this, seize your success now!

Now realize that most true entrepreneurs are used to taking action and used to hard work. Too often we believe the way to improve our situation is to work harder. If you already dragging with exhaustion due to hard work, how can you work any harder. Einstein once said, the definition of insanity “is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results”.

When you’re in a hole, don’t dig faster. The mouse in the cream used endurance to successfully create butter and walk out, not run faster.

Stop digging and regroup; it’s time to work smarter.

Steps to Follow

First we must recognize opportunity before we can seize success. Here’s how:

1. Create your vision
Delineate your idea of success and write it down where you can see it daily. You cannot possibly judge an opportunity as being one to seize or let pass, unless you understand the context to understand whether it fits into your goals. Plus, it has been shown that those who put to paper their visions are more apt to accomplish them.

2. Plan
Develop the framework in the form of a detailed step-by-step plan to make your vision a reality. This also helps you understand how to make decisions applicable to your plan.

3. Step out of your comfort zone
You are most likely comfortable in doing what you’re doing now. Perhaps you even have a nice daily routine. According to Einstein though you are insane! You are doing the same things over and over expecting different results. Stop the insanity today! Have the arugula or kale in your salad instead of the lettuce. Try a new tea or coffee drink. Start with small steps because the one that matters the most may be a doosey. Remember that change is uncomfortable….always.

4. Choose
Moving forward means seizing some opportunities while allowing other opportunities to pass. Oh yeah, you will not seize every single opportunity out there as some have nothing to do with your vision. Stay the course if you truly want business success. Choose wisely.

5. Move
Understand there is no perfect solution. Life does not offer perfect. Even when we receive something in life we have asked for and work for, it does not happen in the exact manner we planned. Life does offer chances. A journey for perfection is an excuse for failure as a way of avoiding stepping out of that comfort zone, and taking action.

6. Commit
Be comfortable in saying “no”. Be comfortable in saying “yes”. Whatever you choose to say, say it with conviction and commit to that choice.

Remember

It all comes down to you to seize business success.. No one will do it for you. At the end of the day, it comes down to how bad do you want it, whatever it is for you.
